Claustrophobia Service
Worried about having your scan? You are in safe hands
The first thing to realise is claustrophobia is a very common feeling for many patients needing an MRI scan. You are not on your own! Rest assured; radiographers are trained professionals who are accustomed to helping patients overcome such fears. We would relish the opportunity to help you successfully complete your examination.
Together we can beat this!

At Darcy Healthcare, the MRI scanner is a Siemens Aera “wide bore” magnet. Wide bore magnets greatly improve patient comfort without compromising on image quality. The scanner is fully illuminated, ventilated & “the tube” remains open at both ends. The diameter of the magnet bore is 70 cm (approx. 28 inches).
The area of the body which requires scanning, will dictate whether it is necessary for you to enter the scanner head or feet first. Many scans do not require your head to be in the scanner at all. The examination time for most MRI scans will average 30 minutes. We are happy to provide further details should you require more information pertaining to your particular situation.

During the scan the radiographer is able to maintain visual contact via a window & TV monitor. Verbal contact is maintained via a two-way intercom system. You will be provided with a call button to alert the radiographer to any concerns you may have during the scan.

MRI scans are noisy therefore ear protection will be provided. There is an option to listen to music during your scan which may help you relax.
Eye masks can be worn should you consider this beneficial.
It may be possible for a relative or friend to accompany you. This is subject to strict MRI safety screening (the same as the pre-scan safety proforma required to be completed by all patients prior to scanning).
If you have any further questions, please telephone us on 0330 8189300 & ask to speak to one of our friendly & professional radiographic team who will be more than happy to discuss any concerns you may have, along with possible solutions.

Should you wish to visit the department ahead of your appointment to visualise the scanner & talk through your examination, this too is encouraged.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us , should you require any further assistance.
